Improving Student Achievement with Emerging Technologies and 1-1 Computing

Elliot Soloway

Watched a video of student using their hand-held computers (cell phones): Keller, TX Trinity Intermediate School

Completed drawings on the cell phone, planets and moon comparison...making and animation and Word document to explain it.

Using the drawing to design graphic organizers in social studies.

Increased used of Project-Based Learning and collaboration....

In lectures, they can access information about concepts. Should we be teaching how to use One Note with all students?

See the Nokia Mobile Learning Institute.

"Change is...Coming" - Elliott
These students are the mobile generation, not the digital generation.

Devices and Networks have rapidly changed!

For 1:1 Computers, Let's Learn from Failures
1. No edcuational software was provided
2. No professional development...how to integrate into curriculum
3. Hardware was not sustainable.

Advocate the use of mobile computers/cell phones....no networking and hardward upkeep and issues.

Student Learning Environments
DyKnow

Teachers Instructional Environments
Blackboard, GoKnow, Epsilen

An environment is needed in which to work effectively, just like other occupations use for their work...

Schools outsource networks.

BlueTooth and Redfly can connect mobile computers to a computer screen. Students can text faster than keyboard.

E-books: (Learning2Go) / WolverHampton, England
Teachers embed questions in text.
Notes can be written in and then exported...

Nan Chiau Primary School, Singapore
Want students to be able to frame questions.

Test Scores are going up because are spending more time on task...take a look at Disrupting Class.

E-rate....government contracts are only 10 months for data plans

Soti mobile controller can have things disabled for a small amount of time.
